What’s in our photography bag!?

What’s in a photographer’s camera bag? It’s a question many have asked, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The contents of a photographer’s bag will vary depending on their style of photography, the type of photography they do, and the location they are shooting in. However, there are some essential items that most photographers will carry with them.

We invest in top-of-the-line camera gear for our business to ensure the best photo quality.

We’ll share every piece of equipment that we bring with us for almost all of our photography sessions – depending on the situation or location, we may leave or bring certain items.

Mirrorless is Magic!

We are equipped with two identical camera bodies, the Canon EOS R6’s.  We LOVE the mirrorless technology, and here are a few reasons why:

  • Smaller size and weight: Mirrorless cameras are typically smaller and lighter than DSLR cameras, making them more portable and easier to carry around. We appreciate being able to carry more equipment that weighs less, allowing us to travel throughout the Gunnison Valley area and beyond with ease.
  • Faster autofocus: You can count on faster autofocus with mirrorless technology. Our R6’s are FAST, meaning that we’ll never miss a single magic moment.
  • Higher image quality: Using a larger sensor allows for more light to be captured and results in a cleaner image.
  • Live view: This allows us to see what the camera will capture before we take the shot. This is useful for composing our shots and ensuring everything is in focus.
  • Silent shooting: Mirrorless cameras have the ability to shoot in silent mode, which is useful for situations where we don’t want to make any noise, such as when we’re photographing Crested Butte weddings.

We LOVE our lenses.

We have a variety of lenses in our bag, and our preferred situational use for each lens.

  • Canon EOS RF 24-70mm F/2.8L IS – A great overall zoom lens; it works well for landscape and portrait photos.
  • Canon EOS RF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS – A beautifully creamy lens with excellent zoom and compression.  This lens makes the mountains appear closer and also captures details of intimate moments without us having to get TOO close.  One of us always has this lens in hand during a surprise proposal.
  • Canon EOS RF 15-35mm F/2.8L IS USM – Our go-to lens for starry sky astrophotography!
  • Canon EOS RF 35mm F/1.8 Macro IS STM – A favorite lens for portraits and macro close-up details of engagement rings.
Bonus items for the win!

Of course, we have plenty of extra charged batteries, memory cards, and a few flashes with flash modifiers in case the moment requires some soft lighting to enhance the scene.

To create more flattering images, we also carry a reflector for bouncing light and often a step-ladder – say goodbye to that double chin!

We have a sturdy tripod for those Milky Way photos and creative nighttime captures.

Every so often, we like to use Fractal Filters for fun and unique artistic effects.

Let’s not forget the bag itself! We have a top-of-the-line ThinkTank MindShift hiking pack that is specifically made for adventure photographers.

While it costs a lot to keep up with the latest and greatest gear trends, we think it’s worth it! Want to guess how much money all of our gear adds up to?

XOXO,

Lydia & T
