Some proposals are quiet. Some are grand. And every once in a while, one comes along that manages to be both at the same time — tucked into a valley so alive with color and mountain grandeur that the scenery itself feels like it was in on the secret.
That was Cooper and Kristiana’s riverside picnic proposal.
Cooper came to us with a vision: get Kristiana to Crested Butte, get her to a specific overlook above the river, and ask her to be his person — all without her seeing it coming. From there, the plan unfolded exactly as the best plans do.
We worked with Cooper in advance to map out every detail: where to position for the moment, what cue he’d use to signal us (an arm around her shoulder — subtle, natural, impossible to miss), and how to time the picnic setup so it would be waiting for them when the moment was over. The early evening light at this location does something extraordinary around the 6 PM hour.
When the moment came, Cooper delivered. Kristiana’s reaction was everything.
Kristiana’s ring is an oval solitaire set on a pavé band — clean, considered, and genuinely stunning in natural light. We made sure to carry that detail through the session: against the river, against the charcuterie spread, resting on Cooper’s shoulder at dusk. A ring this carefully chosen deserves more than one photograph.
Let the record show: their Australian Shepherd was the most enthusiastic attendee at this proposal. Blue-eyed, soaking wet, and completely unbothered by the occasion’s formality, he spent the picnic portion of the afternoon launching himself into the river and shaking off on the blanket. Kristiana and Cooper were delighted. So were we.
Dogs at proposals are, without question, always the right call.
After the proposal moment, we moved down to the grassy riverbank where the picnic spread had been waiting: a woven blanket, ceramic plates in deep teal and brown, a full charcuterie arrangement with prosciutto, salami, brie, aged cheddar, grapes, strawberries, sliced baguette, orange fig spread, caramelized onion spread, candied nuts, and a studded bottle of Prosecco.
This is our Picnic Proposal add-on, and sessions like this one are exactly what it was designed for. We handle the full setup and sourcing — blanket, serveware, charcuterie, champagne flutes, extras like a cozy throw for when the mountain air shifts — so that the person proposing has one less thing to coordinate, and the couple gets to arrive at something that looks and feels like it was conjured rather than planned.
After the picnic, we moved to a nearby alpine pond just as the sky softened into peach and lavender. Cooper popped the bottle. Kristiana held on tight. The Elk Mountains did the rest.
These are the photographs that live on in prints.
Crested Butte’s river corridors, alpine meadows, and mountain backdrops make it one of the most naturally proposal-ready places in Colorado — and summer is peak season for a reason. Wildflowers, green valleys, long golden evenings, and that iconic skyline make it a setting that does a lot of the work for you.
If you’re planning to propose in Crested Butte and want a session that goes beyond the moment itself, our Picnic Proposal add-on is available to book alongside any proposal photography collection. We coordinate the full setup — location scouting, timing, picnic styling, and the celebration pour — so the day flows the way Cooper and Kristiana’s did: with ease, with intention, and with the finest snacks.
