We get it; picking out an outfit for your photoshoot day is a big deal. You’re capturing your fashion and style choices for a lifetime of viewing pleasure. We understand how important it is to look and feel on point. But have no fear! Crested Butte photographer Mountain Magic Media has got you covered!
Here are our favorite tips for picking out the threads to help you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
Have fun with it!
Bottom line, wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and attractive, ultimately making your photos shine! If you’re unsure what clothes look best on you, ask a friend or family member for their opinion.
Your photoshoot is also a great excuse to dress up, so don’t be afraid to go for it – we bet you clean up real nice! It’s also the perfect opportunity to get your hair and makeup done – what a great trial run with the Crested Butte hair salons for your wedding day! Plus, there are so many great things to do in Crested Butte. You can always plan a romantic date out after your photoshoot – another fun excuse to look your best!
Accessories can add a lot of personality too, but we want you to be the focal piece so try not to go too overboard. We always plan for close-ups of your engagement ring, so be sure to have it thoroughly cleaned and sparkly before the session. For the nail-obsessed (like Lydia), check out one of the spas in Crested Butte for a manicure ahead of time – what a great way to both treat yourself and complement your ring’s close-up moment.
Plan for the season
We recommend wearing colors that complement the season for outdoor photoshoots and won’t blend in with the background. Remember – it’s not Where’s Waldo; you want your friends and family to be able to pick you out! If it’s summer, everything will be green, so don’t wear shades of green. For a fall photoshoot, avoiding yellows and oranges is best. Let those colorful aspen do the work for you. In the winter, white is a tough one to stand out in all that snow…unless it’s your wedding day of course! Even then, feel free to go a non-traditional route – we’ve seen some incredible non-white wedding dresses! In the off/mud seasons, brown will let you down – try to go for a little more color!
Also, make sure your clothing choices are seasonally appropriate. Yes, that little black strappy dress looks absolutely fantastic on you…but do you really want to wear that in the snow for a couple of hours? It’s always good to bring extra layers that can be worn just in case the weather turns – wind, rain, hail, snow. We are way up high here in the mountains, and it can get chilly (yes, even in the summer!).
Wear practical footwear
We want you to feel comfortable, and comfy shoes are the way to go! Especially for outdoor photoshoots, you may be romping around the landscape a bit, and proper foot attire is your friend! Plus, your shoes will likely not be seen in most photos. If you’re dying to wear those cute fashionable shoes for the aesthetic, plan also to bring shoes that are comfortable for walking around in-between shots.
Coordination is key
For a couples photoshoot, your outfits don’t have to be perfectly matching but should complement each other and look nice together. We recommend selecting one neutral color and then two or three accent colors.
We also recommend avoiding items that may draw attention away from the subject (that’s you!). Busy patterns may clash, so avoid those. Neon or very bright colors may cast a funky tone on the skin.
If you’re going for a pattern look, we recommend larger patterns in general – larger floral designs look better than smaller floral patterns. The same goes with chunky stripes over small stripes. Also, we highly recommend leaving the logos, brands, or any other advertisements at home. We promise that outfits without any printed words or images will be more timeless!
And don’t stress – if you can’t decide, you can always send us photos before the session. We’d be happy to help you choose the perfect styles!
XOXO,
Lydia & T
